In 2013 Mozilla announced that would be bringing its Firefox platform to the mobile industry and soon after teamed up with ZTE to make the first Firefox-powered smartphone, the ZTE Open. Now both companies are back with a new and improved handset, the ZTE Open C. The phone is available in the US exclusively from eBay for a budget-friendly price of just $99.99 without a contract. The phone is unlocked meaning that can be used with any GSM carrier of your choice, such as AT&T or T-Mobile.
Unlocked ZTE Open C Firefox Phone
The ZTE Open C Firefox phone is an unassuming, compact device aimed at cost-conscious customers. Due to the fact that the phone packs entry-level hardware and very intuitive interface, it seems like a perfect choice for first-time smartphone users.
The ZTE Open C measures 4.96 x 2.55 x 0.43 inch (126 x 64.7 x 10.8 mm) and sports a 4-inch screen with WVGA resolution. Under the hood the phone has a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. There is also a 3-megapixel camera, 1,400 mAh battery, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, and GPS supported by A-GPS.
The handset ships with the latest version of Firefox OS which offers a bunch of new features such as direct music player access from the lock screen or notifications bar and advanced Bluetooth sharing, which allows for simultaneous transfer of multiple files. Another feature worth mentioning is the phone’s universal search which provides an effortless and quick way of finding results for items on your phone, in your apps on the Web or in Firefox marketplace by just typing a single keyword.
When last year’s ZTE Open showed up on eBay, the inventory sold out in a matter of days. Hoping to repeat the success, ZTE once again turned to the largest selling platform to bring its new phone to customers around the world. According to the words of Dr. Li Gong, Mozilla Chief Operating Officer, the company is “pleased that ZTE is delivering another Firefox OS device.” Is it a subtle way of telling us that we can expect more Firefox-powered ZTE phones in the future? It would seems so, though we should probably wait for more official claim before making any assumptions.
Along with the US launch, the ZTE Open C Firefox phone is also on sale in the UK, Germany, Russia and several other European countries.
