Miami-based manufacturer of affordable Android-based smartphones – BLU – has just announced a new extremely budget-friendly handset joining their list of offerings. Called BLU Energy JR the phone delivers compact size factor and a battery promised to provide its potential users with 3 days of usage on a single charge. However, although the phone costs less than a prepaid mobile plan, it hides hardware parameters we didn’t even think to find in a phone launched in 2016, even a low-end one.
Known for delivering unlocked phones at cheap, BLU released the Energy JR delivering 3 day battery life at the price of just $39.99.
Featuring a rather compact as for current standards size factor the BLU Energy JR houses a 4-inch screen panel sporting far from being sharp 480x800p of resolution. In terms of optics, a 640x480p front-facing camera sits above the display. Meanwhile a 3.2MP primary sensor with LED flash is located on the rear panel which has been covered with faux leather texture resembling the one found in the released three years ago Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3. Computing powers are equally weak and come represented by a quad-core MediaTek MT6571 processor coupled with only 256MB of RAM. As for software, the Energy JR runs two-generation old Android 4.4 KitKat out of box.
In the connectivity department, even though the Energy JR offers its users Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, their speeds are limited to EDGE due to 2G radios. However, no matter how discouraging the specs may look like, the phone should find its niche on the mobile market thanks to combination of its two biggest selling points, namely: a solid battery and a really low price tag.
Starting from the battery, the Energy JR is kept alive by a 3,000 mAh battery that is said to deliver 72 hours of standard usage or 30 days on standby mode on a single charging. The numbers shouldn’t surprise us much if we take into account the phone’s less than decent hardware. Moving on to the pricing, the Energy JR costs only $40, which makes the phone a perfect choice for all those who want to give their kids a very first smartphone. Furthermore, it should be also a nice alternative to elderly people who want to start their journey into the smartphone world since despite its “vintage” specs, the phone still offers a smartphone functionality at a price of a regular cell phone.
Potentially interested in purchasing the device will find it on Amazon where it is already listed in black and white color options. As always in the case of BLU phones both variants are sold unlocked. When it comes to shipping, it will start in two to four weeks.
