Are you thinking about moving from a notebook to a tablet but not quite ready to give up a physical keyboard yet? There is a solution you might like. Microsoft has just released the Surface Pro Windows 8, which is a full-power PC that you use like a notebook, or a tablet, or both. The device is available at the Microsoft Store and costs $899 for a 64 GB model and $999 for a 128 GB variant.
Surface Pro Windows Tablet – Overview
The Surface Pro measures 10.81 x 6.81 x 0.53 inches and weighs about 2 pounds. The tablet features a 10.6-inch ClearType HD Display which offers true deep blacks and vivid, saturated colors, high resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and 16:9 aspect ratio. The touch screen can detect ten fingers at once so you can use both your hands to operate the tablet.
The device is powered by a 3rd generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000 paired with 4 GB of RAM. The tablet offers, depending on a model, 64 GB or 128 GB of internal memory, which corresponds to approximately 29 GB or 89 GB available for user content respectively. The Surface Pro is also equipped with a 22 degree HD rear camera with 720p video capture as well as a front-facing shooter for video chatting.
The tablet packs a number of ports, including full-size USB 3.0, microSDXC compatible with up to 64 GB cards, MiniDisplay port, cover port, and a VGA adaptor. The Surface Pro runs Windows 8 Pro and all the desktop Windows applications you want, including Mail, Messaging, SkyDrive, Internet Explorer 10, Bing, Music, Video, Games, and more.
To enrich the experience, the Surface Pro comes with its own pen so you can tap as precisely as with a mouse, or draw and write smoothly on screen. When you move the pen close to the screen, it automatically blocks finger touch so it does not interfere with what you are doing. The pen is pressure-sensitive, so the thickness of the line depends on how hard you press the pen to the screen. The other end of the pen works as an eraser. The pen has also a large button on the side which functions as the right mouse button.
The Surface Pro is compatible with Type and Touch covers. The Type cover is a typical notebook-like keyboard, which would be a perfect accessory for those who are used to typing on a physical keyboard. It combines the speed and comfort of a classic laptop keyboard with super-thin, lightweight design. The Touch cover offers a sleek, spill-resistant exterior for working. To enjoy a full touch screen experience simply fold the cover back; when you close it, it turns off your display. The cover comes is available in black, white, cyan, magenta and red. Both, Type and Touch covers are sold separately.
Other features include Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n), ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, microphone and stereo speakers.
