Sony’s SmartWatch 2 was officially presented to the public in June. However, the company apparently felt that the device needed more attention, especially when Galaxy Gear was announced yesterday, so the SmartWatch 2 was today introduced one more time. The device will arrive at stores in Europe later this month wearing a price tag of €179 (about $236). This is the price for the standard black silicone strap model. If you want to go more stylish, the stainless steel strap model will cost €199 (around $263). If you like to match the watch to your clothing, color silicone straps will set you back additional €19 each.
Sony SmartWatch 2 – more than just a watch
The SmartWatch 2 is a follow-up to the last year’s SmartWatch. Sony delivered its promise of improving user interface, but the watch’s functionality remains pretty much the same as it used to be. Being a watch, the device obviously displays time. For this purpose, you will have a wide selection of faces to choose from. The “smart” part in the names means that it is more than just a watch. The device pairs with your smartphone and serves as a second screen, so you can check your calls, messages, emails and notifications without having to dig the phone from your pocket.
The SmartWatch 2 features a 1.6-inch display with a 220 x 176 resolution. The device has NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 for connectivity and is compatible with the majority of Android smartphones, unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Gear. Sony claims that under normal usage the device’s battery should give you 3 to 4 days on one charge. As most Sony’s recent offerings, the SmartWatch 2 has IP57 certification, meaning that it is water-resistant up to 3 feet for up to 30 minutes.
