The Sony Xperia ZR popped on radar late last month when several sources reported that Sony was working on a waterproof phone, possibly something along the lines of the Xperia Z. Today, May 13, Sony officially unveiled the phone. The manufacturer posted a video on its website presenting the Xperia ZR’s most interesting features and provided a handful of technical details. Curiously enough, previously rumored specs turned out to be fairly accurate.
Sony Xperia ZR Waterproof Phone
The Sony Xperia ZR boasts a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with Adreno 320 GPU. The phone is loaded with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory with microSD support for additional 32 GB. As expected, the camera features a 13-megapixel Exmor RS sensor with burst mode. There are, however, some discrepancies regarding the screen. Depending on where you click on Sony’s website you can find out that it is either a 4.55-inch TFT 1280 x 720 display with a pixel density of 323 ppi or 4.6 inches at 319 ppi.
Pretty exciting is the device’s level of durability. The Xperia ZR received IP55 and IP58 certification which means that it is dust resistant and waterproof up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. Is it rather improbable that you will be making phone calls at the bottom of a swimming pool but it is always good to know that the phone will survive an accidental plunge into a bathtub. The handset comes with support for LTE and GSM/UMTS at HSPA+ speeds. It also features NFC and HD voice. The Sony Xperia ZR will ship running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will be available in black and white.
