ByinTips & Guides | March 9, 2014

PhoneWhen you begin searching for a new phone the very first decision you will have to make won’t be related the brand nor model but how the handset must be advanced to meet your needs. Assuming that you don’t want just a basic device capable of sending / receiving calls, texts or snapping low quality photos, you will come across two options – to buy a feature phone or to pick a smartphone. To decide which one would be better for you, first you need to learn the difference between feature phone and smartphone. Here is the explanation and few tips worth to consider.

Smartphone vs. Feature Phone – Differences

Feature PhoneThe difference between feature phones and smartphones is not very clear due to technology moving forward very fast. What was considered a smartphone two or three years ago falls under feature phone category today. For instance, either feature phones and smartphones offer QWERTY keyboard or touch screen display. Do you remember Samsung Instinct, the ‘iPhone killer’? This is a perfect example of a feature phone.

In their essence feature phones offer more functions than basic phones, yet they are not as advanced as smartphones. For example, feature phones run on proprietary operating systems and in most cases are not compatible with third party software and applications. For this reason, their functionality is more limited than that of smartphones.

Smartphones, on the other hand, are practically mini computers in your palms. They run on mobile operating systems out of which the most popular ones include Android, Apple’s iOS and Windows Phones. Smartphones are capable of providing constant access to the web via 3G and 4G network and doing typical office work such as creating and editing documents, sharing files, keeping track of your appointments, etc. Very popular smartphones feature required fast data connection is GPS navigation which may come in handy when you travel often.

Smartphone vs. Feature Phone – Pricing

Windows SmartphoneThe difference in hardware and software between feature phones and smartphones directly translates to price. The former are typically much cheaper than the latter. Plus, since smartphones require constant access to internet, service providers require purchasing data plan before they activate the phone on their network.

The decision whether to buy a feature phone or smartphone is quite easy when you establish what you need the phone for. If you intend to use it as a portable tool for work on the go and need constant access to internet, then you should go for a smartphone. However, if beyond making calls and sending texts, all you want is to check your email, update your Facebook account or play a few games, then a feature phone more likely will do the job.

Making the right decision between smartphone and feature phone may benefit you in lower expenses, and consequently in savings. You will have all the features you need at way cheaper price and lower service plan since you won’t have to pay extra for features you won’t use.
