New day brings another confirmation that there will be more than one variant of the Galaxy S5. Only two days ago we reported alleged specs of the camera-centric Galaxy S5 Zoom that leaked in Poland. Today we are back with news regarding a ruggedized version known as Galaxy S5 Active. Or at least that’s what we are led to believe by a notorious leakster @evleaks. The upcoming device has a model number SM-G870x and is tipped to be released by AT&T, Sprint and a number of other carriers.
Samsung SM-G870 is the Galaxy S5 Active
The only thing that @evleaks revealed is that the SM-G870x aka Galaxy S5 Active will be coming to AT&T and Sprint and some other unspecified carriers. Unfortunately, the tweet didn’t include any details nor pictures so we have no idea in what ways the phone is going to be ruggedized. The regular Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with IP67 rating which makes the device dustproof and water-resistant up to one meter for up to 30 minutes. Its front-panel is protected against scrapes and scratches by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Since the Galaxy S5 itself is sort of ruggedized, the only thing that would make sense in the case of the Galaxy S5 Active model is MIL-STD-810G certification. This would make the phone fully resistant to damage from salt, dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock. Samsung could also go for reinforced casing.
As far as hardware is concerned, nothing is known at the moment. We assume that the Galaxy S4 Active, this year’s model will be a tad less high-end than the flagship Galaxy S5. Of course, at this point we are just speculating, so take the news with a pinch of salt and keep an open mind. In the end the Galaxy S5 Active may turn out nothing like we expect.
The ruggedized version Galaxy S5 Active is said to be launched later this year. Right now, Samsung is getting ready to distribute the original Galaxy S5. In case you forgot, it will happen in two weeks on April 11th.
