Although the beginnings of Tizen date back to September 2011, the platform hasn’t been used in many devices so far. Developed by Samsung, the Linux-based system found its way to a few smartwatches, a couple of cameras, and a handful of other devices, among which is just one smartphone – the Samsung Z1. It may change soon, though. According to the latest rumors, Samsung may launch a new smartphone shortly with new version of Tizen out of the box. Live photos of the device, most likely called Samsung Z2, have just leaked out.
Samsung Z2 smartphone with new Tizen 3.0 software tipped for the first half of 2015
Samsung was talking about a Tizen smartphone long before the Z1 was released so it seems that adjusting Tizen for seamless performance on a phone was a bit of a challenge. Finally, the Z1 hit the market in mid-January and it appears that work on a successor didn’t take so much time and effort. A new Tizen phone was caught on camera by folks from Tizen Experts and although the name wasn’t officially confirmed, it is believed that it’s the Samsung Z2. The pictures are not very clear, but design-wise the device looks like an offspring of the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S4.
According to earlier rumors, the Z1 successor may come with a qHD display of unknown size and allegedly offering a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. It could be powered by a 32-bit quad-core processor but so far there is no word on type of the chip and its speed. Other rumored features include 1GB of RAM and a 2,000 mAh battery. The handset is expected to go on sale with a new version of Tizen, Tizen 3.0 out of the box.
The alleged upcoming announcement of new Tizen phone is not much of a surprise. The Samsung Z1 has been doing pretty well since it was launched so it’s logical that Samsung wants to explore the possibilities of Tizen OS some more. The handset is expected to go official in the first half of 2015, though no exact date has been mentioned yet. It’s already May, so if the predictions are true, we are looking at two months tops before the announcement.
