It was speculated as early as January that at some point the Samsung Galaxy S5 will have the some army of variants as the Galaxy S4 was accompanied with Galaxy S4 Zoom, Active and Mini. Apparently, those speculations were not completely unfounded. A substantial number of specs of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom camera / phone hybrid device has just leaked out, albeit in somewhat in unconventional manner. Of course this variant will focus on photographic features.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom – What to expect
It’s not every day that we see specs of a high-end phone revealed by means of handwritten notes. Normally, we would dismiss such “evidence” as unreliable, but in this case we are willing to accept it for a number of reasons. First of all, “mysterious informant” claims that the notes come from a special presentation shown to a limited group of people connected to Samsung in Poland. This certainly makes sense, since Samsung has a huge R&D facility near Warsaw. The presentation, which allegedly included photos of the Galaxy S5 Zoom, was top-secret but the participants were allowed to take notes. The specs largely coincide with what we have heard about the S5 Zoom before which only adds to credibility of the leak.
The idea behind the Galaxy S5 Zoom is exactly the same as the Galaxy S4 Zoom, that is to merge smartphone and compact camera into one device. The S4 Zoom, as awesome as it was, had however a few flaws the biggest of which was its protruding lens. The Galaxy S5 Zoom is expected to be slimmer with some of the components hidden inside its body for a more compact design. We could be looking at some type of internal zoom similar to what is used for compact digital camera.
The Galaxy S5 Zoom will up the camera CMOS sensor to 20 megapixels (as a reminder, the S4 Zoom has a 16-megapixel unit) and will add Xenon flash and optical image stabilization while keeping the 10x optical zoom. The phone’s display will grow in size to 4.8 inches and will have the resolution of 720p. Other features supposedly include 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.4 KitKat and a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor. The last bit doesn’t quite add up, since previously a 1.3 GHz Samsung Exynos 5 Hexa was mentioned. Other details are yet to be revealed, but for now the Galaxy S5 Zoom looks very promising.
