That Samsung is having a mini version of its flagship Galaxy S5 is not exactly a secret. Due to numerous leaks and rumors popping up every now and then, the phone itself is getting less and less mysterious. Recently for example, @evleaks brought us news claiming that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini may hit the stores under a different name – the Samsung Galaxy S5 Dx. Well, this is something new and it seems that Korean manufacturer is ready for some changes this year. Is this the end on “mini’ suffix in Galaxy’s lineup?
Samsung to rename the Galaxy S5 Mini to Galaxy S5 Dx
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Dx instead of the Glaxy S5 Mini? Surprised? Well, it’s pretty understandable. For the last couple of years Samsung kept the same naming scheme calling smaller version of the Galaxy S3 and S4 the Galaxy S3 Mini and S4 Mini, respectively. We had no reason to suspect it would be any different this year, yet the company apparently is ready for some changes. We had a taste of that when the Galaxy S5 Zoom was announced as the Galaxy K Zoom. We are not sure what “Dx” suffix stands for, maybe “deluxe” I guess, but a device fitting the description of a mini S5 showed up recently on Samsung’s UK website.
Could it be a totally different phone? Certainly such a possibility exists, however, it’s every unlikely, especially since the URL for the page mentions SM-G800 model number which is consistent with previous rumors regarding the S5 Mini. The screenshot reveals a familiar design with rounded corners and several color options including black, white, blue, green, brown/gold and grey (or possibly light purple).
It seems that the heart rate monitor won’t be present, though it’s not much of a surprise. The mini version of the Galaxy S5 is expected to be a mid-range offering with lesser specs than it’s bigger brother. The scaled down variant is rumored to come with 4.5-inch 720p display, 1.5 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, 8-megapixel main camera, 2-megapixel front-facing shooter and a 2,100 mAh battery. A quad-core Qualcomm processor is said to be powering the phone, however, model and speed remain unknown. Android 4.4 KitKat will be on board along with Samsung’s latest version of TouchWiz skin. Also the phone is rumored to be both water and dust resistant.
The fact alone that the Galaxy S5 Mini or Dx appeared on Samsung’s website clearly suggest that the phone is almost ready for release. We don’t know, however, whether we are talking days or rather weeks. Check back with us for more news.
