Usually, the more sophisticated a device is, the easier it breaks. To make their products last longer, smartphone manufacturers increase their durability, for example by making the phones water resistant. When it comes to tablets, however, ruggedized models are not easy to come by, which doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. In fact, a new device has just been announced by Panasonic. The company officially unveiled heavy duty Toughpad FZ-B2 Android tablet for tough users.
Panasonic Toughpad FZ-B2 Rugged Tablet
The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-B2 is the third member of Panasonic’s Toughpad family which also includes the 5-inch Toughpad FZ-E1 and Toughpad FZ-X1 announced in February. While FZ-E1 and FZ-X1 were somewhere in between a smartphone and a tablet, some models even offering telephony features, the FZ-B2 is a typical tablet. Well, maybe not exactly typical, since it has much sturdier construction than an average tablet. According to Panasonic, the FZ-B2 can survive a drop from up to 150 cm, sports IP65 rating and can work in temperatures ranging from -10 to +50 degrees Celsius.
Designed mostly with business users in mind, the Toughpad FZ-B2 boasts a pretty long battery life – Panasonic promises up to 7 hours of usage time on one charge. Moreover, the battery is removable, which is quite unusual for a tablet, and in order to swap it you don’t even have to power down the device.
The tablet’s screen measures 7 inches, offers WXGA (1280×800) resolution and uses strengthened glass with anti-reflection layer. The display is sensitive enough to respond to touch through fabric such as gloves. Powered by a quad-core 1.83 GHz Intel chip, the tough guy comes with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, a full size USB 3.0 slot, microSD, and a microSIM slot.
The Toughpad FZ-B2 will hit the stores in Europe in December and will be priced at £591 + VAT. Potential buyers in the US will have to wait two months longer to buy the tablet as it will go on sale in February 2015. The price will be pretty steep – to get your hands on the Toughpad FZ-B2 you will have to fork out as much as 1,299.
