For many years smartphone industry has been obsessed with thin phones. Even though in most cases the thickness of the phone is not a decisive factor when choosing a new device, there is a large group of users who would love to boast about how skinny their handsets are. And manufacturer feed on this desire and go out of their way to make their products as slim as possible. Up until yesterday, the record holder was the Gionee Elife S5.1 which is just 5.15 mm thick. Today we have a new winner. Oppo has officially announced the Oppo R5, world’s thinnest smartphone measuring only 4.85 mm.
Oppo R5, world’s thinnest smartphone
As hard as it is to believe, the new Oppo R5 really is that thin. A few years ago we wouldn’t even dream it could happen, and here it is – the first smartphone that measures less than 5 mm in thickness. In addition to being insanely slim, Oppo’s latest offering has a pretty attractive design too. The case is made of 3D-welded aluminum alloy that has been hand polished to make it even more premium. The phone is 148.9mm tall and 74.5mm wide and weighs in at 155 grams.
Thin profile aside, the R5 appears to be a very decent device. It packs a 5.2-inch AMOLED Full HD display, quad-core 1.5GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. The main camera has a 13-megapixel Sony IMX214 sensor and offers a few neat tricks such as Fast Focus, subsequent re-focus, 4K video capture and Ultra HD for creating up to 50-megapixel images. The front-facing camera is of 5-megapixel kind.
Connectivity features include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and 5G Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/a with Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Display, and the phone runs ColorOS 2.0 based on Android 4.4 KitKat. If we wanted to complain about something it would be the battery which has capacity of only 2000mAh. On the plus side, the phone comes with Oppo’s VOOC mini charger which can charge the phone up to 75% in 30 minutes.
You can admire the R5 in all its glory at Oppo’s website but unfortunately the company hasn’t revealed yet when the phone will go on sale. We do know, however, how much it will cost – the R5 will be priced at $499. Anyone interested?
