ByinSmartwatches | January 13, 2014

Pebble SteelBig electronics events such as Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas are still dominated by smartphones and tablets, but smartwatch fans could find something interesting too. This year Pebble took the lead with its new Pebble Steel – an improved mostly in terms of design version of the original Pebble watch. The device will hit the stores on January 28th priced at $249. And yes, the device will cost a whole $100 more than the previous model.

Pebble Steel vs. Original Plastic Pebble

Pebble Steel vs. Original PebbleThe “Steel” in the name stands for metal band that comes in two color options – Brushed Stainless and Black Matte. If you are not a fan of metal wearables, there is also a leather version, which on the other hand won’t work with interchangeable watch bands, though.

As of design, the Pebble Steel is smaller and thinner than the predecessor with the body made of stainless steel down to the buttons. The front face has Corning Gorilla Glass instead of the plastic cover from the original watch. There is also a LED light to indicate charging status. With these improvements, the new Pebble finally looks like a stylish wearable for professionals or business and not just a cool modern gadget.

Inside, however, it is still the same Pebble you know and love. Its e-paper display ensures readability even in direct sunlight, so you will always know when notifications arrive, regardless of where you are or what you are doing. At night you can light up your Pebble Steel with a quick flick of the wrist. The watch is waterproof up to 5 ATM, so you can wear it at the pool, on the beach, or in the shower. When fully charged, the battery will give you reasonable 5 to 7 days of usage time. The Pebble Steel has vibrating alarms, over 100 watchfaces and works with an assortment of sports, music, games, commuting apps.
