The second generation of Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet is finally official. Coming to the market under the name Surface 2, the tablet brings a refreshed design and hardware improvements. The Surface 2 will hit the market together with its more advanced brother, the Surface Pro 2 and will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow (September 24). The device will be priced lower than its predecessor, starting at $449 for the most basic model. The Surface 2 will start shipping on October 22.

The tablet’s new silver magnesium case is covered in fingerprint-resistant coating. The body is both thinner, lighter and houses a 10.6-inch “ClearType” display with 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is a significant improvement over the previous model. The device is powered by a new Tegra 4 chipset and offers either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal memory. The Surface 2 is also equipped with a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 3.5-megapixel camera on the front panel. The kickstand now offers more inclination options making using the tablet easier on your wrists. The Surface 2 runs Windows RT 8.1.
As a bonus, Microsoft throws in one year of free Skype Wi-Fi hotspots and international Skype calls to landlines. Another gift includes 200 GB of free Skydrive storage. The Surface 2 will fit nicely into Microsoft’s new covers – the Touch Cover 2, Type Cover 2 and the Power Cover. The Touch Cover 2 features thinner and lighter design than the previous model. The Type Cover 2 comes with an LED backlight. The Power Cover, on the other hand, is equipped with its own battery.
