The high-end Lumia 950 and 950XL were the biggest stars of Microsoft’s event in New York City; however, they weren’t the only smartphones announced yesterday. You might have missed that part, since the company devoted only a brief moment to the device, but if you heard the name Lumia 550, that’s the third phone we are talking about – a low priced Windows 10 Mobile Phone for the masses.
Lumia 550 will be the first budget smartphone running Windows 10 Mobile
The 5-series have always been aimed at budget conscious customers, even when Lumia phones were made by Nokia, and apparently Microsoft is continuing this tradition. The Lumia 550 will arrive at stores with a price tag of just $139 and will be the first entry-level device to be launched with Windows 10 Mobile on board.
Measuring 136.1 x 67.8 x 9.9mm, the Lumia 550 is a rather compact offering, at least compared to the other Lumias unveiled yesterday. The phone has a 4.7-inch HD display with a pixel density of 315 ppi and is powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor paired with 1GB of RAM. There is 8GB of internal memory expandable via microSD slot compatible with up to 200GB cards and you will also get access to OneDrive cloud storage so you shouldn’t run out of space for all your content.
One of the best features of the Lumia 550 is 4G LTE connectivity – a must-have in times when phones rely on the internet for most activities. The handset is also equipped with a 5-megapixel main camera with auto focus and 720p video capture, as well as a 2-megapixel selfie camera. Other key specs include Bluetooth 4.1, FM radio and a 2,100 mAh battery which should be good for up to 17 hours of talk time, up to 60 hours of music playback time or up to 28 days of standby time. As we already mentioned, the Lumia 550 will be the first budget smartphone running Windows 10 Mobile and will come with the latest version of Office apps out of the box.
The Lumia 550 is not even half as premium as the other new Lumias, but its main selling point are not innovative solutions, but excellent price to specs ratio. The phone will go on sale some time in December, first in Europe and later in other markets.
