It is not the first time that we have heard of a device with a flexible screen. Two of the biggest smartphone manufacturers, Samsung and LG, have mentioned the idea several times but in rather general terms and with no reference to possible release date. However, now it appears that a phone with flexible screen is closer to being launched than ever before. In a conversation with Wall Street Journal LG’s vice president of mobile Yoon Bu-hyun revealed that the company might be ready with its offering by the end of this year.

Yoon Bu-hyun also stated that the display will come as a result of close cooperation with LG Display and will use OLED technology. If everything goes as planned, the phone is expected to be announced in the second quarter of 2013. However, don’t put this date in your calendar just yet. Implementing a new technology may bring some unexpected issues and result in delays.
Whatever the date, there is no doubt that a phone with a flexible screen will be launched. Question is, how flexible the screen will be. At this point, the most probable seems a display that wraps around the edges of the handset. Similar device was presented by Samsung at CES this year. It is very unlikely that you will be able to bend or fold the phone itself. Current technological knowledge does not allow to manufacture bendable batteries or circuitry yet, so these parts will have to stay rigid.
