Let’s be honest, 2016 was pretty rough for LG, though this time a year ago nothing suggested it would be like this. The company was very optimistic and had great hopes for its first modular phone, the LG G5. However, when the device was launched, everything went downhill pretty fast – the phone and its Friends weren’t as warmly received as LG believed they would. Even the premium V20 didn’t manage to save the day and the manufacturer is ending the year with nearly $400 million loss. However, new year is a chance to impress users with a new flagship. It appears that LG learnt a lesson and the G6 is expected to arrive with lots of improvements among which are wireless charging and waterproof body.
The LG G6 is expected to be announced at MWC but it’s going to be very different from the LG G5…
New old design
The idea of a modular phone isn’t bad at all, but it seems that LG overdid it a bit with the G5. The company touted modular design left and right but then launched only a few “friends.” Moreover, in order to attach an accessory, it’s necessary to reboot the phone, which is simply a waste of time when you do it often. Bottom line, the idea was interesting, but the approach not so much and apparently LG won’t make the same mistake with the G6. According to rumors, the phone will have a more traditional metal unibody which will open new possibilities for LG, namely to make the handset dust and waterproof.
Non-removable battery with wireless charging
Unibody means that the shell of a phone is made from a single piece of metal and glass and it doesn’t open, so the battery can’t be removed by user. LG was one of the last manufacturers to offer devices with removable batteries which many users seem to favor. However, internal batteries have a lot of benefits too. For example, they can be made larger in the same cavity. There’s no official word on how large G6’s battery will be but rumors suggest at least 3,000 mAh. Moreover, it will most likely feature wireless and fast charging.
As far as other features are concerned, word on the street is that the LG G6 will sport a 5.3 or 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display and might be powered by a Snapdragon 830 processor with 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Users will have at least 32GB of internal memory at their disposal with a microSD slot to add more storage is necessary. It’s very likely that LG will keep dual rear camera setup with 16-megapixel main shooter and a secondary wide-angle or zoom sensor. The selfie camera may snap photos at 8 megapixel and could come with optical image stabilization. Other features might include improved fingerprint scanner, better sound, USB Type-C connector, and headphone jack.
As of now, there is no official announcement date but if past years can be of any indication, the LG G6 most likely will be announced at MWC 2017 in Barcelona around the same time as Samsung’s new devices. The G5 was unveiled on February 25 and went on sale in April. We expect that LG will do the same with the LG G6.
