Not a day goes by without a new smartphone, tablet or other smart devices being introduced to the world; however, the happiest moments for any gadget fan are those big electronics shows like CES. The beginning of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas belongs to LG and the company’s brand new offering – the LG G Flex 2 which just went official a couple of hours ago.
LG G Flex 2 confirmed by US carriers.
The phone, as the name suggests, is a follow up to last year’s LG G Flex which was one of the most revolutionary handsets of 2014. What does the Flex 2 have to offer? Frankly speaking, quite a lot. Like the G Flex, LG’s second generation “banana” phone gently bends around horizontal axis; however, the design is improved and now the device has “curves ranging from a radius of 400mm to 700mm across the front, back, sides and top-to-bottom edges.”
According to LG, such shape comes with many advantages. For starters, the phone’s unconventional profile brings the microphone closer to the mouth which results in better quality conversations. Moreover, thanks to the steeper 650mm radius curvature of the back, the LG G Flex 2 is more comfortable to grip and fits easier in the pocket.
LG also kept the Self Healing back which set the G Flex apart from other phones. A special technology used for back cover allows to eliminate minor scrapes and scratches and makes the phone look fresh and new by reducing the signs of everyday usage. LG managed to improve the process and brought the healing time from about three minutes to just within ten seconds at room temperature.
Other areas where the handset shines include camera and battery. The Flex 2’s 13-megapixel camera is accompanied by Optical Image Stabilization and fast Laser Auto Focus which measures the distance between the subject and the camera using a laser beam, this way allowing users to capture high quality images even in low-light conditions. Moreover, the camera comes with Gesture Shot option which makes it easy to capture the perfect selfie with a simple hand gesture recognizable from up to 1.5 meters away. Speaking of selfies, the Flex 2 is equipped with a 2.1-megapixel user-facing shooter. The battery is a 3000 mAh unit – the only curved mobile battery in the world by the way, which can be charged up to 50 percent in under 40 minutes.
As far as other hardware is concerned, the G Flex 2 is a truly premium offering. The phone packs a 5.5-inch Full HD Curved P-OLED display with 1080 x 1920 resolution which works out to a great pixel density of 403ppi and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 64-bit octa-core CPU and Adreno 430 GPU. The chip is clocked at 2.0GHz and ticks along 2GB of RAM.
The handset comes with either 16GB of 32GB of storage space, both expandable up to 2TB. As for connectivity, the Flex 2 offers 4G LTE radio, 802.11 b/g/n/ac dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Smart Ready (Apt-X) 4.1, NFC, SlimPort, A-GPS / Glonass, and USB 2.0. Unsurprisingly, the Flex 2 runs the latest version of Android OS, the 5.0 Lollipop iteration.
The LG G Flex 2 will go on sale at the end of this month, first in Korea and later in other markets. In the US AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular have already confirmed that will offer the phone later this year. The phone will be available in two colors: Platinum Silver and Flamenco Red.
