Summer is just around the corner and it’s a perfect time for outdoor activity. As the days get longer, sun shines brighter and temperatures climb higher, we happily spend out time jogging, hiking, sailing, swimming, riding bikes, etc. While we enjoy the summer our phones and smartphones not so much as this is the season when they are heavily exposed to a risk being damaged. Unless they are as durable as the Kyocera Hydro Icon which has just been launched by Boost Mobile prepaid service provider and is now for sale at carrier’s online store for $149 without contract.
Kyocera Hydro Icon for Boost Mobile
The Kyocera Hydro Icon for Boost Mobile is the latest addition to Kyocera’s Hydro lineup and like the rest of the family combines durability with attractive design, at least for a ruggedized device. The Hydro Icon has the appearance of a typical handset without the bricky shape characteristic of rugged phones, yet it’s capable of withstanding rough treatment that would most likely kill any other smartphone.
Thanks to IP57 certification, the Icon is protected from dust and liquid ingression meaning that it can survive for up to 30 minutes in up to 1 meter of water. A shiny metal band runs around the device’s edges which is a clear indication that the Icon shouldn’t shatter to pieces when it falls on a hard surface. Indeed, the phone meets mil-spec 801G standards for protection against drops and vibration.
On the hardware side, the Hydro Icon sports a 4.5-inch display with 960 x 540 resolution, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facing sensor. Under the hood the phone has a quad-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor, 8 GB of internal memory, 4G LTE radio and NFC. Other key features include Smart Sonic Receiver audio technology, which boosts the sound clarity in noisy environments, Eco-Mode for battery life saving and MaxiMZR power management tools. Rounding up the specs is a 2,000 mAh battery with wireless charging capability and estimated talk time of up to 14 hours and up to 193 hours of standby time.
As you can see, the Kyocera Hydro Icon is not a particularly high-end device. In fact, it sits right on the borderline between mid-range and entry-level league; however, due to its durable characteristics it appears to be an interesting choice for Boost Mobile subscribers, especially for its affordable price range.
