ByinPhones Without Contract | June 12, 2014

Huawei StoreHuawei devices arrived in the US a while back; however, the only way to get one of them was through carriers or third-party retailers. Starting today, potential Huawei customers can choose one more option to shop for Huawei phones as the Chinese manufacturer opened its first online store in the US. The very first device to be sold in the store is the massive 6.1-inch Ascend Mate 2 which was launched in unlocked flavor and without contract. The phablet can be pre-ordered at GetHuawei.com for an affordable price of $299.

Unlocked Ascend Mate 2 on sale in the US via Huawei Online Store

Huawei Ascend Mate 2Huawei is one of the most popular brands in China; however, in the US the company remains in the shadow of more recognizable brands like Apple, Samsung, HTC or LG. The US store is Huawei’s attempt to reach out to a larger group of potential customers, especially those who are not into long-term agreements with carriers. According to Huawei’s research about 41% of smartphone buyers prefer not to sign any contracts and twice as many don’t care about the brand of their phone. All they want is a decent handset, preferably not too expensive, and Huawei is here to satisfy that need.

In order to keep prices at more competitive level, the devices offered in Huawei’s store certainly won’t come with any ground-breaking technology or out-of-this-world features. We should rather expect lower-end or mid-range offerings at the most at low prices. At the moment, the only phone available for purchase is the Ascend Mate 2 but Huawei promises that more models are on the way. In addition to phones, the store will also sell accessories and pre-paid SIM cards. That said, customers who pre-order the Mate 2 before June 22nd will also get a free case, a free SIM card with one month of service, and 20 GB of storage on Bitcasa for life.

If the name Ascend Mate 2 rings a bell, it doesn’t mean that you are having a déjà vu moment. The phone debuted at CES in January this year but until now was out of reach of US customers at least through the usual channels. The Mate 2 is a huge device featuring a 6.1-inch IPS LCD screen of 1280 x 720 pixels resolution, and powered by a 1.6 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor. The handset sports 2 GB of RAM and there is 16 GB of internal memory for your content. If it’s not enough, the phone has a microSD slot compatible with up to 64 GB cards.

The Ascend Mate 2 is equipped with a massive 3,900 mAh battery, which in addition to providing many hours of usage is also capable of charging other devices. The phone has dual cameras with a 13-megapixel shooter sitting on the back and a 5-megapixel sensor with “panorama selfie” mode located on the front. The Ascend Mate 2 measures 161 x 84.7 x 9.5 mm, weighs 202 grams and ships with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Emotion UI on top.

Last but not least, the phone is LTE-capable and comes with the usual set of connectivity features including Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, microUSB and GPS with Glonass. Important thing you should keep in mind when you order your Ascend Mate 2 is that it’s a GSM device and won’t work on CDMA networks such as Verizon Wireless. Since the phone is unlocked it is compatible with any GSM carrier, such as: AT&T, T-Mobile, Straight Talk, Metro PCS and revamped Cricket Wireless.
