The original Huawei Ascend Mate was introduced at CES in January this year and at the time of its announcement inspired a few “ahs” and “ohs” mainly thanks to its gigantic display. We are a little over six weeks away from CES 2014 and it looks like Huawei is getting ready to announce the Ascend Mate’s successor, known as the Ascend Mate 2. Since August we have been aware that Huawei had a new phone in the works, however, we knew nothing but the screen size. Now the device was caught on camera and the photos along with leaked specs started making the rounds.
6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate 2 Phablet
Apparently, the phablet will take several cues from its older brother and will bring to the table some much needed improvements too. Like its predecessor, the Ascend Mate 2 will sport a 6.1-inch IPS display but the resolution will be bumped to 1080p from 720p.
The device is said to be powered by HiSilicon’s latest Kirin910 chipset with a quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9 processor ticking along Mali 450 GPU.
Other features we expect to find on the Ascend Mate 2 include 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. A tad disappointing is the version of the OS Huawei has chosen for the device. According to the report, the Ascend Mate 2 will ship with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which may not be that ancient but is not the most recent either.
There is no word on pricing just yet, but Huawei’s phones tend to be rather affordable and we have no reason to suspect that it will be different this time.
