Last week we brought you the news that HTC listed on its website a slightly slimmed down version of its flagship One M8, called HTC One E8. Obviously aimed at emerging markets, the phone was expected to be cheaper that its premium brother and the Samsung Galaxy S5. And indeed it is. The One E8 was just announced internationally priced at half as much as the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 while packing near-identical specs. In China the phone will sell for 2,799 yuan, which is about $447.
HTC One E8 vs. HTC One M8
Where’s the catch? It appears that there isn’t one but in order to bring the cost down, some sacrifices had to be made, obviously. The main difference between the HTC One M8 and HTC One E8 lies in design and rear camera setup, but other than that both phones have exactly the same to offer. In the case of the One M8 all the internals are encased in an aluminum body which imitates brushed metal. The One E8, on the other hand, is made of polycarbonate. Different materials used for the body directly translate to the difference in weight – the M8 weighs 5.64 ounces (160 grams) while the E8 tips the scale at 5.11 ounces (145 grams).
The HTC One E8 is also a bit more modest in the camera department, at least compared to the M8. The innovative Duo Camera with dual LED flash, UltraPixel sensor and f/2.0 aperture was replaced by a regular 13-megapixel shooter with f/2.2 aperture. A 13-megapixel sensor is still a premium choice, but compared to M8’s camera it seems to lack this extra wow factor.
Other than that, the E8 is as high-end as it can be and offer similar set of hardware as the Galaxy S5. The handset sports a 5-inch S-LCD3 display with Gorilla Glass 3 and 1920 x 1080 resolution at 441 ppi, and is powered by a quad-core 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 GPU. It appear that it will be available only with 16 GB of storage (the M8 also has a 32 GB version) which is still expandable up to 128 GB via microSD slot. Other features include a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 2 GB of RAM, LTE radio, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, a 2,600 mAh battery and Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Sense 6.0 on top.
The HTC One E8 will be available in four color options including black, white, red and blue.
