If you were expecting the All New One flagship phone from HTC to be announced today at MWC, hold on a bit longer. It looks like the March 25th date was more than just a rumor meaning that the phone won’t be unveiled today, or tomorrow, or for another month for that matter. It doesn’t mean that Taiwanese manufacturer arrived to Barcelona with nothing to show. On the contrary, the company lifted the veils off of two handsets HTC Desire 816 and HTC Desire 610, both of which well fit in mid-range category.
HTC to focus on mid-tier phones in 2014
Introducing new mid-rangers appears to confirm the speculations claiming that HTC’s policy for this year is to focus on mid-tier phones and increase its share in this segment as its not dominated by Apple or Samsung yet. The new additions to the portfolio are called Desire 816 and Desire 610 and seem to promise pretty decent specs for their class. The first to go on sale will be the Desire 816. The phone will hit the stores in March in China and in April globally. The Desire 610, on the other hand, will be out in Europe in May.
5.5-inch Desire 816 4G LTE Phablet
Out of the two phones, the HTC Desire 816 features a more impressive set of specs. To begin with, the handset closes in on a phablet category with it 5.5-inch screen offering a 720 x 1280 HD resolution which translates to a pixel density of 267 ppi. HTC chose to use a 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and pair the chip with 1.5 GB of RAM. The Desire 816 offers 8 GB of internal memory and a microSD slot for expansion should you run out of onboard storage.
The phone is equipped with dual cameras with the main sensor shooting photos at 13 megapixels and offering f/2.2 aperture and 1080p video capture. As if to compensate for the lack of UltraPixel technology, HTC put on the front an impressive 5-megapixel snapper with f/2.8 aperture, wide-angle lens, and 720p video capture.
As far as connectivity is concerned, the handset packs 4G LTE radio and an assortment of standard features such as Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, and optional NFC. Other features of the HTC Desire 816 includes a 2,600 mAh battery and BoomSound front stereo speakers the same as the one used in the HTC One.
4.7-inch HTC Desire 610 Android Phone
The HTC Desire 610 is more modest spec-wise but still doesn’t cross lower-end threshold. It is smaller than the Desire 816 and boasts a 4.7-inch display with 540 x 960 resolution and a pixel density of 234 ppi. Like its bigger brother, the Desire 610 is also powered by a Snapdragon 400 processor, this one however, is clocked at 1.2 GHz. The amount of RAM was reduced to 1 GB but internal memory still offers 8 GB with optional expansion via microSD slot.
The Desire 610 comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and f/2.4 aperture, as well as a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, both capable of 720p video capture. Other key features include BoomSound speakers, a 2,040 mAh battery and the same array of connectivity options as the 816, that is 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, and optional NFC.
