If you’ve been following news from the tablet market then you probably heard that Apple is planning to release a huge iPad possibly with stylus support. If that’s true, it means that Apple is still working on the tablet, while HP is already in the game with new slates. Earlier today the company launched the massive 12.3-inch Pro Slate 12 with Duet Pen and Stereo Speakers along with a smaller 7.9-inch Pro Slate 8.
HP Pro Slate 12 vs. Pro Slate 8
At first glance both the HP Pro Slate 12 and the Pro Slate 8 look like an overgrown HTC One M8 complete with dual speakers which are located on the sides of the displays. The smaller Slate 8 packs a 7.9-inch screen with an impressive resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels which works out to a pixel density of whopping 324 ppi. Surprisingly, the Pro Slate 12 which has a 12.3-inch display offers 1600×1200 resolution which brings pixel density down to only 162 ppi.
Other than that, the tablets appear to come with identical internals including quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 chip, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in memory (the Slate 8 also come in a 16GB variant), 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity features include standard set of Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC.
What’s really interesting about the new tablets, though, is the “Duet Pen” stylus. The accessory uses Qualcomm’s Ultra Sound technology and can write on anything including good old paper. Thanks to a five microphone array on the tablet to track a stylus which emits high-pitched sound, whatever you write on paper immediately appears on the tablet’s display. The Duet Pen is another addition to “Blended Reality” ecosystem which launched last year.
HP’s new tablets should not be treated as sophisticated toys for folks looking for nothing more than entertainment on the go. In fact, both slates are pretty advanced devices and as such are aimed mainly at business users. The HP Pro Slate 8 sells for a starting price of $449 for the 16GB model. The larger Pro Slate 12, on the other hand, is priced at $569. Anyone out there planning to get themselves one of these bad boys?
