After two years of rumors, Baidu is making final preparations to launch its first smartphone, for now referred to as the Cloud Phone. Details on the phone as well as information on how much it will cost and when exactly it will be in stores will be revealed through a ‘grand’ online conference on December 21, exactly at 12:21. The Cloud Phone is said to be “100% Internet phone” and supposedly very different from other Internet phones. What does it mean exactly?
The only way to find out is to wait for the conference. Result of a cooperative effort between Baidu, China Telecom and an unnamed hardware manufacturer, the handset will feature a 4.5-inch touch screen with a rumored resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and will be powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and will come in three colors: black, white, and red.
The phone will run Baidu’s own operating system, which will probably resemble Google Android. With so many smartphones, most of which ship with Android, implementing a completely new operating system seems like a risky move, but if anyone has a chance to do it, it would be Baidu with its strong position on the market.
