AT&T started the day with a few good news for Samsung fans. Not even a month after the Samsung Galaxy S5 was announced, the carrier started accepting pre-orders on the phone and also revealed pricing for the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches. If you bundle the Galaxy S5 with one of the Gear devices you can save $50 on purchase of the smartwatch with AT&T discount offer. The promotion starts today and runs through June 5th.
Pre-orders on Samsung Galaxy S5 for AT&T
AT&T is offering a few payment options so you can take your pick. You can grab the Galaxy S5 for $199.99 with a new two-year contract or for $649.99 outright. The device is also available with AT&T Next 18 and 12 service for $25 and $32.50 per month, respectively. The Gear 2 costs $299 while the Gear 2 Neo will set you back $199. All devices are expected to start shipping in “early April”, though no specific date is set yet. Our bet is on April 11th, since this is the day Samsung mentioned at its announcement event back in February. However, we would advise you to mark the date with a pencil and take into account other possibilities as well.
In case you missed all the hype surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S5, here is a quick reminder of its key specs. The Samsung Galaxy S5’s dustproof and water-resistant body measures 72.5 x 142 x 8.1 mm and tips the scale at 145 grams. The handset features a brilliant 5.1-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with wide viewing angles and Multi Window capability and is powered by a 2.5 GHz quad-core processor. At the moment AT&T doesn’t reveal what type of processor it is, but we can probably expect the Snapdragon 801 Soc.
The Galaxy S5 comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory expandable via microSD slot up to 128 GB. AT&T will also add 50 GB of free cloud storage. For photographic experience you will have a 16-megapixel rear camera with Phase Detection Auto Focus for ultra-fast focus time. The phone runs Android 4.4 KitKat and comes with new S Health app which together with Heart Rate Sensor will help to keep better control over health-related issues such as nutrition, fitness and wellness. Other features of the Galaxy S5 include IR blaster, fingerprint sensor and a 2,800 mAh battery.
Samsung Gear 2 vs. Gear 2 Neo
As of the smartwatches, the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are very similar to each other. The main difference between these two is that the former packs a 2-megapixel camera located on the face of the watch, while the latter lacks this feature. Both watches have 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display and interchangeable straps, compatible with standard 22 mm pin watch bands. The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo received an IP rating of IP67 which means that they are dustproof and can withstand submersion in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
When paired with compatible Galaxy phone, the watches will display notifications and allow you to make voice calls and send text messages without having to take the phone out of your pocket. Both watches are equipped with heart rate monitor and music player.
