AT&T is finally ready to take that money you have been saving for the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The carrier has started taking pre-orders for the device earlier today. The smartwatch is priced at $299.99 and obviously does not require any contracts. AT&T will ship it to you for free with online purchase. Expect the Galaxy Gear to arrive at your doorstep in two weeks, that is on October 1st.
Galaxy Gear – a “shortcut” to your smartphone
The Samsung Galaxy Gear is a nifty piece of equipment. The biggest advantage of the smartwatch is that is serves as a kind of “shortcut” to your smartphone. What does it mean exactly? For example, the device allows you to answer calls and read messages without having to dig your smartphone out of your pocket.
The Galaxy Gear also displays emails and notifications from smartphone’s calendar. The smartwatch features a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display with 320 x 320 resolution and is powered by a 800 MHz processor supported by 512 MB of RAM. There is also 4 GB of internal memory.
The Galaxy Gear is undoubtedly one of the most advanced devices of its kind. Unlike other smartwatches, the Samsung’s offering packs a 1.9-megapixel camera with BSI sensor, auto focus and 720p video capture. Other features include Bluetooth 4.0, gyroscope, accelerometer, microphone and speaker. The device comes pre-loaded with a handful of useful apps such as RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal, Evernote, eBay and more.
On a downside, at just 315 mAh, battery life is somewhat low. Also, in order to take full advantage of the Gear’s functionality, you need to pair the smartwatch with a smartphone, and at the moment the only compatible phone is the recently announced Galaxy Note 3.
