The Apple Watch released last year was a pretty awesome device, by many considered the best product in wearables category. When you have such great device, is there even room for improvements? Sure there is. Apple proved that today with the Apple Watch Series 2 which got official a few hours ago.
Apple announced the Watch Series 2 with faster processor, water resistance, GPS functionality and super bright screen.
On the outside, the watch looks like its predecessor – it has the same square body, customizable watchface and a funky watch dial Apple calls the digital crown for scrolling and zooming. However, one look at specs list leaves no room for doubt that Apple really did its best to make the second generation of its watch way better than the first.
New specs and features
For starters, the Apple Watch Series 2 is water resistant up to 50 meters. In fact, it has fitness lab support for swimming with two new workouts, Pool Swim and Open Water Swim, with lap-count, calorie burn, and distance, as well as learning support to better reflect the individual wearer. The wearable also has built-in GPS so you don’t have to bring your phone with you to record your jogging routes and speeds. The watch will do it all by itself. The device, however, doesn’t have cellular connectivity, probably to improve battery life, so you won’t be able to get notifications.
The Apple Watch Series 2 also has a new processor, called S2, which now has two cores and is 50 percent faster than previous generation. Graphics was also improved and is now able to work twice as fast as older GPU which means that even such intensive apps as Night Sky 4 will be easy to handle. Direct sunlight won’t be a problem either, since the watch has two times brighter screen than its predecessor. In fact, at 1000 nits Apple Watch Series 2’s screen is the brightest that was ever used by Apple in any of its products.
The Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in several variants. The basic model will have aluminum case, more high-end variant will offer stainless till body, while the most demanding customers will be able to opt for a new pear white ceramic version which is said to be 4 times more durable than stainless steel. If you are really into sports, you will be able to choose a with a colorful rubber band and a bunch of extra features to motivate users to more active lifestyle. It appears that with the announcement of the second generation Apple Watch, Gold edition will no longer be available.
Pricing and availability
You will be able to pre-order the Apple Watch Series 2 this Friday, September 9, and the device will go on sale in store on September 16 with the exception of Nike+ edition which will start shipping some time in October. Pricing will start at $369 for the basic aluminum model. Previous generation, now rebranded to Series 1, will have the processor upgraded to dual-core S2 and will be available for purchase starting at $269.
