Apple announces 4.7-inch iPhone 6 equipped with Retina HD display and A8 chip

ByinAnnouncements | September 9, 2014

White iPhone 6We started hearing about the next generation iPhone almost immediately after the iPhone 5S was released last year. As months were passing by, our anticipation kept growing fed by countless speculations, rumors, and leaks which some of them were pretty detailed. Finally, the big day arrived and today Apple announced the long awaited iPhone 6. As expected, the company in fact unveiled two iPhones – the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Let’s focus on the iPhone 6 first now.

Apple iPhone 6 looks simply gorgeous…

iPhone 6 All SidesYou don’t even have to go into technical details to realize that Apple put a lot of effort into developing the iPhone 6 as it looks simply gorgeous. The first thing you notice when you compare the new iPhone to older models, is that it’s much bigger. The screen measures 4.7 inches diagonally with is a whopping 0.7 inches more than the iPhone 5S. The size of the display alone could win a large group of potential buyers who until now opted for other brands simply because iPhones were considered small by today’s standards.

Measuring just 6.9mm in thickness, the iPhone 6 is the thinnest iPhone that has ever been released. The design language follows the iPad Air and iPad Mini with rounded sides and glass front that curves around the edges. The panel is ion strengthened which suggests that it’s more durable than regular glass; however, doesn’t seem to be made of sapphire as rumored. The display offers Retina HD resolution with 1334 x 750 pixels at 326 ppi, wider viewing angles and better color saturation.

The chip is accompanied by M8 motion co-processor. Apple also worked on improving battery life which resulted in up to 14 hours of talk time – a nice bump from the 5S’ 10-hour battery life.

Another feature where the iPhone 6 shines is connectivity. The device will work on as many as 20 bands of LTE with VoLTE for such carriers as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and several international service providers. The iPhone 6 also comes with faster Wi-Fi which can reach speed of up to 1 Gbps, and finally offers NFC for mobile payments.

The iPhone 6 iSight camera keeps the pixel count at 8 megapixels (like the iPhone 5S) but sports a few significant improvements. The new sensor is paired with an f/2.2 aperture lens, a new True Tone flash, digital image stabilization and faster autofocus. Macro and landscape shooting, as well as phase and smile detection features were also improved. The front-facing camera packs a new sensor and brighter f/2.2 aperture.

iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 6 PlusOn paper the Apple iPhone 6 looks like an awesome device. Luckily for us, we won’t have to wait long to put that theory into test, as the phone will go on sale on September 19th, with pre-orders staring in just three days, on September 12th. The 16GB variant will set you back the usual $199 on contract.

Users who want a device with more storage will obviously have to pay more – the 64GB model will cost $299, while the 128GB version will be priced at $399. Surprisingly, the 6th generation of iPhone family seems to be missing a 32GB member. The iPhone 6 will be available in space grey, silver and gold first in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. By the end of the year, the phone will roll out in 115 countries altogether.
