Today is the day that we have been waiting for since we learned that Apple was working on the next generation of its iPhone. As expected, the iPhone 5S, as it is called, was announced today in Cupertino in California. In the US, the phone will be available from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless starting September 20th for $199.99 with a new two-year contract. This is the price for a 16 GB model. If you need your handset with more memory, the 32 GB and 64 GB versions will retail for $299.99 and $399.99, respectively.
New Apple iPhone 5S in Black, Silver and Gold
As rumored, the iPhone 5S will be available in three color options: black, silver and gold. Apple used aluminum for the body and went for chambered edges. Design-wise, the device is not much different from its predecessor, the iPhone 5, however it has been refreshed in hardware and software department. Some of the upgrades include fingerprint scanner, improved camera, new chip and new version of the OS.
Possibly the biggest innovation introduced with the iPhone 5S is the fingerprint scanner built into the new sapphire home button. The feature is called Touch ID and is used to unlock the phone by scanning your fingerprint. The scanner is activated by a capacitive ring around the home button. Touch ID also allows you to use your fingerprints as a “signature” while buying apps, music, and movies in iTunes and the App Store. What if you share your phone with your spouse or other member of the family? No problem. Touch ID can be set to authenticate multiple fingerprints.
Apple implemented a few interesting improvements in the camera. The sensor still shoots at 8 megapixels, but at the same time Apple says that it is 15 percent larger. The managed to achieve such effect by enlarging the pixels. As a result, each pixel lets in more light and consequently allows for better quality of photos taken in low-light conditions. The camera is accompanied by Apple’s new dual-LED flash called “True Tone”. As befits a high-end smartphone, the iPhone 5S’ camera offers image stabilization and advanced recording options such as a 120fps 720p slow-motion video mode and as well as 1080- HD video at 30 frames per second. Other features include burst mode, panorama, and “Choose Favorite” option, to mention just a few.
The iPhone 5S packs a 64-bit A7 processor, which according to Apple is twice as fast as the chip used in the iPhone 5. The processor supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and is accompanied by what the company calls a “motion co-processor” or the M7. Its function is to collect data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass in order to cooperate better with “a new generation of health and fitness apps.” The iPhone 5S comes with enhanced battery life. Apple claims that the unit is capable of delivering up to 250 hours of standby time, 10 hours of browsing on LTE, and 10 hours of talk on 3G.
Besides the US, the iPhone 5S will be released this month also in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK. Customers in other markets will need to wait until December.
