It looks like the rumors about a more affordable version of iPhone panned out. Along with the high-end iPhone 5S, Apple also announced today the iPhone 5C which is a more budget-friendly alternative to the company’s flagship offering. The iPhone 5C will be an interesting option for users in emerging markets. The iPhone 5C will be available for pre-order beginning September 13th and will arrive to stores on September 20th. The iPhone 5C will be offered by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless in the US. The 16 GB model will sell for $99 while the 32 GB version will be priced at $199. Naturally, you will need to sign a new two-year contract with your carrier.
Apple’s iPhone 5C vs. iPhone 5
A cheaper version of the iPhone was highly anticipated especially in those countries where subsidizing a phone is not a common practice. In many markets, including Europe and Asia, customers buy phones at full price, thus a lower price is expected to attract more customers and reflect in higher sales. Off contract price of the iPhone 5C is set at $549 for a 16 GB and $649 for a 32 GB model.
With the iPhone 5C, Apple introduces a rainbow of colors to its lineup. The phone will be available in five hues including white, blue, green, yellow, and pink. If you want to go even more colorful, you will be able to add one of Apple’s cases. As for the material used for the body, it is not aluminum like in the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5C is made of a hard-coated polycarbonate with a metal frame on the inside, which also acts as the phone’s antenna. The phone’s design does not leave any visible seams or joins to spoil the device’s aesthetics. Both the back and front panels are made of a single piece of material meaning that battery is inaccessible.
The iPhone 5C comes with similar specs as the iPhone 5, throwing a handful of upgraded features on top. The device sports a 4-inch Retina display and is powered by an efficient A6 chip. The phone runs iOS7 which was “designed to complement the iPhone 5C beautifully” by matching such features as the home screen and wallpaper colors the hues of the body. Compared to the iPhone 5, the 5c offers improved battery life. According to Apple, the device is capable of delivering up to 10 hours of talk time, up to 10 hours of LTE browsing and up to 10 hours of video playback.
The iPhone 5C is equipped with an 8-megapixel iSight camera as well as and a 1.2-megapixel user-facing camera with improved back-side illumination and improved audio. A new Camera app features you more shooting and editing options, such as filters which can be applied before or after you take the photo. The camera is also capable of recording 1080p HD video. In video recording mode the camera offers 3x zoom, video image stabilization and face detection for up to 10 faces. Other features include LTE support for networks around the world, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, and also dual-carrier Wi-Fi.
