Amazon’s Fire series (earlier known as Kindle Fire) dates back to 2012. During these years the retailer kept an annual upgrade schedule and this time is no different. Amazon typically unveils its tablets in fall, so we knew that we could expect an announcement soon, especially since there were rumors suggesting that new devices were on the way. It turns out that the rumors were spot on – Amazon just kicked off a 7-inch Fire tablet priced at $49.99 along with Kids Edition for $99.99.
Fire Tablet – Buy 5 tablets get one free
As you may know, Amazon’s tablets are not the most expensive devices on the market; however, as far as we can remember, the Fire for under $50 is the retailer’s cheapest offering. At such low price, you would expect the most basic hardware there is, but the Fire is actually quite a decent slate. For starters, it features a 7-inch display with 1024×600 resolution. Amazon could have used TN technology but instead the company opted for a better IPS screen.
Powering the slate is a quad-core 1.3GHz processor and there is 1GB of RAM along with 8GB of internal memory expandable up to 128GB. The tablet also sports two cameras – 2-megapixel on the back and VGA on the front. It will ship with the latest Fire OS 5 with such features as X-Ray, ASAP, Mayday, the new Word Runner and FreeTime for kids.
Kids Edition Fire Tablet with 2-year replacement warranty
Speaking of kids, Amazon also made official a special Kids Edition of the Fire tablet which costs $99.99. It’s identical to the Fire tablet but it comes with a colorful kid-friendly case, a bunch of kid-centered software solutions and additional warranty. The Fire Kids Edition offers a year’s subscription to FreeTime Unlimited and is now including a tweaked web browser with 20,000 “child-safe” webpages and YouTube videos. You will also be able to add more sites to the whitelist.
If the tablet is intended for older kids, you can give them more freedom but still monitor how they are using the slate through the new Activity Center. This useful control tool will provide you with a list of apps used, games played, videos watched, and websites loaded, along with the time spent on each. Moreover, knowing that kids tend to be less careful with their things than adults, Amazon added a two-year, no-questions-asked replacement warranty which means that whatever happens to the tablet, you will get a new one for free.
If you need more than one Fire tablet, Amazon has a great deal for you – the retailer is selling the slate in six-packs for $249.95. Wondering what’s wrong with the math? Everything is exactly as it’s supposed to be – you will be paying for five units and you will get one for free. It sounds like an interesting promotion, especially if you have some birthdays coming up and you have no idea for gifts.
Both tablets are available for pre-order beginning today and will start shipping on September 30th.
