The flagship brand of Alcatel Mobile Phones a joint venture between French Alcatel-Lucent and Chinese TCL Communication – introduced their new OneTouch Hero 2 phablet at the IFA 2014 trade show hosted in Berlin. Alcatel doesn’t normally associate with a large, high-end smartphones, but they finally introduced one and it doesn’t look bad especially when device supports a stylus pen.
Alcatel OneTouch Hero 2 Phablet
The new Alcatel OneTouch Hero 2 is a 6-inch phablet sporting a slim and stylish aluminum body that feels great in a hand. The 6-inch Full HD IPS display brings a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which populates 367 Pixels-Per-Inch (PPI). It maintains a slim frame for its large screen. The display is basically edge-to-edge and takes up 90-percent of the front of the phone. The phablet is more than just an oversized smartphone – it also acts as a hub for a variety of companion devices that users can carry, keep on their desk or connect to their TV, creating its own ecosystem. It comes with its own Stylus, to use on the display to write notes or to exercise users artistic abilities.
The OneTouch Hero 2 smartphone weights just 175g and measuring in at just 160.5 x 81.6 x 7.9 mm thick. Powering the handset is LTE octa-core processor – an increasingly common style of chipset in phones marketed outside of the United States. It comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card to add an additional 32GB of memory. A 3,100 mAh battery promises up to 500 hours of standby time on 3G and 4.5 hours of talk time on 4G and it is running Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box with a bit of Alcatel’s UI.
The Hero 2 has connectivity options including 4G LTE, 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct and Display, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and USB 2.0. The main camera is a 13.1MP shooter with autofocus and LED Flash, able to record 1080p video and software: HDR, face and smile detection, touch focus, LTL panorama, Image and Video stabilizer (OIS + EIS). We need to highlight that there’s also an optical image stabilization. The Hero 2 also packs a 5MP Front-Facing camera (FFC) for terrific video chatting and selfies.
The phablet also features an interesting accessory called the MagicFlip DJ phone cover, a mini DJ mix panel housed on a flip cover that allows users to mix music on the go. A variety of MagicFlip cases, including an LED one that lights up with notifications, will be available. A line of companion devices are designed to help shape the Hero 2 into a media machine. MagicFlip covers can be customized- MagicFlip DJ for music and MagicFlip LED that lights up with notifications about missed calls, alerts or the current time.
The cover will let you “mix” music through a panel on the case, and there’s said to be several cases on the way including one with LED’s. These accessories include a device to turn the smartphone into a media remote, and one that allows the phone to function as a laptop.
Sidekick 2 is a companion device that allows users to remotely control their TV and music as well as an extension to user’s phones – they can access messages, contact lists and more. The portable E-Card allows users to read notes, maps, e-books via the comfort of paper. Another companion device, the SmartBook functions as a Smartphone in laptop form, while TV-Link allows you to connect your Hero 2 wirelessly to your big screen TV.
The Alcatel OneTouch Hero 2 has placed a particular emphasis on creating it with a few other tricks up its sleeves in the form of a stylus and some cool accessories. The smart stylus works like the Samsung’s S Pen offering features like writing and sketching and resides in a slot on the handset. Handwriting recognition also provides desktop-like functionality to create and edit office documents on the go. The stylus pen paired with hand writing recognition ensures that using the phone as an on-the-go note-taking device doesn’t result in digital gibberish.
Alcatel put a lot of thought into the device and is a step in the right direction if they hope to make a real statement in the flagship world. The availability of these devices has not been announced yet neither the carriers but we are expecting to hear from Alcatel soon. The price has not yet been disclosed though it will hit the market in September 2014.
