Why you should buy an unlocked Dual-SIM phone.

Dual-SIM phones can make life easier for users who have two phones.

Dual-SIM phones are associated mostly with developing markets, because that’s where demand for such devices is the strongest. However, over the past couple of years, dual-SIM phones have started to gain popularity in other parts of the world as well, including the US market. A dual-SIM phone is not an absolute must for every user, but having such device will certainly benefit those who have a need for more than one SIM card. Here’s why you should buy an unlocked dual-SIM phone.

What a dual-SIM phone can and can’t do

Since dual-SIM phones haven’t been very popular in the US until recently, there are many misconceptions regarding the way they operate. Many folks still think of dual-SIM handsets as some sort of magic which doubles texts, minutes and data. Well, that’s not how it works. So, what exactly a dual-SIM cell phone can and can’t do?

The specifics depend on a particular model, but general rules are the same for all dual-SIM phones. As the name implies, a dual-SIM phone is a device which has two SIM card slots. Both numbers are active at the same time so you don’t have to switch between the cards to answer or make a call. The same goes for texts – you can receive and send messages from whichever number you want. Keep in mind, though, that while stock messaging app on your phone will most likely support dual-SIM configuration without any issues, some apps, for example Google Messenger, will not.

As far as data is concerned, however, things get a little bit more complicated. In most dual-SIM phones only one slot supports high-speed data, while the other usually relies on a slower 3G or even 2G connection. In other words, the “fast” slot can be considered as the main, and the “slow” one, as secondary. For this reason you should remember to put the card you will use for data in the main slot. Also, you should be aware that you can’t use both cards for data simultaneously – it’s either one or the other.

Why you may need a dual-SIM phone

You may wonder why even bother with a dual-SIM phone, if increasing data speed is not an option. There are plenty of reasons, but it all boils down to one main motive – to avoid carrying around two phones when you need to use two numbers.

1. To separate business from personal life

Many people want to draw a clear line between business and personal life and it’s a very healthy practice. The easiest way to do so is to assign a different number for business purposes. When you have a dual-SIM handset, you don’t have to stress about forgetting your business phone because you have two numbers with you all the time and your clients can reach you even on weekends and holidays.

2. To lower the costs

The number of plans offered by carriers can make your head spin, but so far no one has come up with a perfect solution – some plans are better for talk and text, while others offer great value for data. With a dual-SIM phone you don’t have to sacrifice neither one nor the other. You simply put two SIM cards in one phone and use one for calls and texting and the second for data. Even though you will be paying for two plans, you may actually save quite a lot of money in the long run.

3. Perfect for travelers

Dual-SIM phone is an excellent solution for users who frequently travel abroad. Dual-SIM phones, at least the one available in the US, are unlocked and quad-band most likely will support any GSM service provider and network wherever you go. You can buy a cheap prepaid card and use it for local communication and at the same time you can still keep your regular number active for incoming calls and message from your home country.

Summary

Dual-SIM phones have some limitations, however, if you are using two lines and want to do so with as little hassle as possible, choosing a phone with two SIM slots is a great option.
