What are the Droid Phones, are they different from Android smartphones?

Many people confuse Droid phones with Android when in fact these terms have very different meaning

The main criteria according to which smartphones are classified today is the operating system. Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry are the most common platforms and out of the four, Android is the leader when it comes to the variety of brands and models this system can be found on. In your search for a new handset, especially if you are considering becoming a Verizon customer, you may have stumbled upon Droid phones. While it may seem like it’s short for Android, it actually is not the case and these terms can’t be used interchangeably. So, what exactly are Droid smartphones and how are they different from Android smartphones?

Android Phones

Android is one of the four main operating systems and a pretty specific one at that. It’s what you call an open source platform which means that anyone can contribute to its development. Of course, new versions of Android are released only by Google, but if you have a really good idea and have necessary skills to make it into an Android app, you can do so and maybe even make some money off it.

Android, like other platforms, is what makes a smartphone smart. Without an operating system, the device you are holding in your hand would be nothing more than a collection of expensive components good for nothing. Wipe the operating system out and there’s no internet connection, the camera can’t do any of the fancy tricks, there’s no way to text or make calls, nada, null. In other words, Android is like a brain in a living body – it controls all vital functions.

Droid Phones

Using this analogy, a Droid phone would be the actual body. Android platform is used in a dozens of smartphone models and Droid is just one of the brands which is offered only by Verizon Wireless. The first phone of the series dates back to 2009 and believe it or not, the carrier had to purchase licensing rights for the term from Star Wars director George Lucas.

Unlike other popular lineups, for instance the Samsung Galaxy S or HTC One which are made by a single manufacturer, Droid devices were not exclusive to one company for a very long time. Over the years the vast majority of Droid phones came from Motorola, but a few were also manufactured by HTC and there was one made by Samsung. However, according to the announcement from 2013, all Droid phones will be exclusive to Motorola. Droid phones always run Android operating system which is where all the confusion comes from.

Summary

Summing up, if you are looking for an Android phone, the variety of manufacturers, brands and models can make your head spin. Moreover, Android phones are offered by every single carriers. However, if you have a taste for a Droid phone, you can be sure of three things – it will always runs Android, it will be locked on Verizon and made by Motorola if it’s a recent model. If you are still having trouble telling the difference, think of the following example – all elephants (which represent Droid phones) are gray (which is Android), however, not all grey things are elephants. Hopefully, it’s more clear now.
