Ubuntu Phones expected to come in October, available to developers this month

ByinAnnouncements | February 9, 2013

Ubuntu Coming UpMark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, a company providing services to companies that use Ubuntu software, revealed today that the first smartphones running Ubuntu OS will be launched this year in October. It is a very nice surprise, since originally Ubuntu phones were expected to hit the stores in the first quarter of 2014. Even better news is that unfinished version of the OS will be available to developers as early as the end of this month, so they will have plenty of time to play with it and work on the main apps.

Ubuntu Phones coming this year.

Ubuntu PhonesShuttleworth mentioned “two large geographic markets” that will get Ubuntu phones, though did not name any countries. The speculation is that one of them may be Asia, or more specifically China. First, because Ubuntu is quite popular out there. Second, because being new to the mobile phone market, it would be much easier to convince Chinese phone makers to use the new OS in their phones than any of the most famous companies.

Does Ubuntu stand any chance against such stars as Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Phone? Shuttleworth believes it does, especially in corporate IT departments who already use Ubuntu on the desktop and back end. Ubuntu phones could be an attractive alternative for security-conscious companies, possibly even better than BlackBerry. Also could solve a few problems for example by letting users stream corporate right on their handsets as well as boot up the full Ubuntu OS when they are docked to a workstation.

Will you consider buying an Ubuntu phone when it is finally available?
