A while back we shared with you a few details on the new open-source operating system Tizen. Being one of the biggest promoters of the Tizen Linux Mobile platform, Samsung confirmed that it will launch the first Tizen smartphones later on this year. We also expect Fujitsu and NEC to start offering Tizen devices, but no sooner than 2014. Back to Samsung, according to the company’s documents, the first Tizen-running phone is scheduled for announcement some time in the third quarter of 2013. The release should occur in August or September.
Samsung Redwood and Melius Tizen Phones
The first device to ship with the new OS has been confirmed and it is the Samsung GT-I8805, codenamed Redwood. The handset was discovered in the UAProf of Samsung’s website. It looks like the phone will come with a HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The screen exact size remains unknown at this point. The device apparently will offer LTE connectivity and will be powered by a Cortex A9 based processor.
Images from Tizen Greek Community reveals the renders of the upcoming Samsung Redwood GT-I8805. The pictured phone runs Tizen 2.1 operating system that comes featured with S-Voice. It is also probable that along with the Samsung GT-I8805 Redwood, another Tizen smartphone will be introduced around the same time. The Samsung GT-i8800 Melius, as it is the one we are talking about, should be very similar in terms of specs but with no LTE connectivity.
