A new HTC flagship smartphone, the HTC Droid DNA, which is the US version of the J Butterfly that was launched a few weeks ago in Japan, has fund its way to Verizon. As we expected last week, today Big Red introduced and began taking pre-orders for the 5-inch phablet loaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which costs $199.99 with a 2-year service agreement. In the next eight days, on November 21st, the HTC Droid DNA will be in stock at Verizon local stores and online.
Learn more about the HTC Droid DNA
The HTC Droid DNA for Verizon comes with a 5-inch 1080p Super LCD3 touch screen with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, which works out to stunning 440 ppi pixel density surpassing even that of the iPhone’s Retina Display.
The Droid DNA is driven by a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset (APQ8064 paired with MDM9615m, to be specific) nicely paired with 2 GB of RAM. You will have 16 GB of built-in memory at your disposal, but be careful because there is no option to expand the storage capacity since there is no microSD card slot.
One of the indisputable highlights of the DNA is its 8 megapixel f/2.0 rear camera with 28mm wide angle lens, BSI sensor, ImageChip and 1080p HD video capture. On the front you will find a 2.1MP f/2.0 shooter that features 1080p HD video record and an 88-degree ultra-wide angle lens with improved low light performance.
The smartphone runs the latest version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with HTC’s Sense 4+ user interface, which means improved Voice Search, Notifications and Gallery and enhanced Speech-to-Text converter. The phone comes pre-loaded with full suite of Google apps, which include Google Now, Google Maps with Street View and Latitude; Google Talk with Video Chat; Gmail; Google Play Books; YouTube; Google Calendar, Google+, with Hangouts, Google Play, and more. Verizon and others also have added a little something to the mix, so together with your DNA you will get Backup Assistant Plus (Contacts backup/restoration only), Visual Voice Mail, Amazon, Amazon Kindle, Amazon MP3, Amex Serve, Audible, IMDb, My Verizon Mobile, NFL Mobile, Reign of Amira, Slacker Radio, Verizon Tones, Viewdini, VZ Navigator, Zappos and more.
The Droid DNA is a powerful device if you take into account audio prowess as it takes advantage of Beats Audio and a 2.55v built-in headset amplifier and dedicated rear speaker amp, which is geared to offer minimal distortion at maximum volume.
The HTC Droid DNA also offers Verizon 4 LTE network, quad-band GSM and UMTS, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX support, NFC, MHL, dual mics for noise cancellation and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (dual-band) with hotspot capability to share the connection with up to 10 devices. And let’s not forget the powerful 2020 mAh battery, which is supposed to guarantee up to 12.8 hours usage time and up to 14.7 days standby time.
