The Oregon Scientific’s MEEP! is protected by an orange silicon bumper that runs around the whole device and has a stronger recessed screen to help keep the tablet safe in case it accidentally slips out of the little one’s hands. If orange does not qualify as you kid’s favorite color, the silicon bumper is also available in Meepadelic Purple and Meepto Pink.
The MEEP! features a 7-inch zForce touch screen with a 800 x 480 pixel resolution powered by Neonode Multisensing Technology, which is very responsive and easy to navigate using small fingers. The scrolling menu system is intuitive and allows quick access to apps, games, music, videos and more. The MEEP! also sports a 0.3 MP front facing camera / camcorder for taking photos and video chatting.
The tablet is powered by a Cortex A8 processor clocked at 1 GHz, and packs 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. There is also a microSD card slot, which allows to expand the storage capacity.
The MEEP! relies on Wi-Fi to connect to the internet and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a user interface designed with kids in mind. The device comes pre-loaded with several art and learning apps and popular games like Angry Birds, UNO, and Toon Goggles. The MEEP! Store offers a vast selection of games and apps to download for free or with MEEP! coins (previously purchased by mom or dad using real money).
Google Play is not available directly from the MEEP!, but parents can access the store from the Parents Portal and buy more content which can be then seamlessly downloaded to the tablet. The Parents Portal provides remote access to the tablet and allows to actively monitor their child’s online activity, limit play time duration, create a “whitelist” of permissible content, participate in creating a “blacklist” of inappropriate content and add phrases to the tablet’s built-in “bad word” list, so they would be eliminated from search and blocked in the chat feature.
Thanks to a USB cable included in the box, the child will be able to transfer music, videos and ebooks from a PC or MAC and the HDMI port allows to share the content on a television.
The MEEP! is compatible with a suite of accessories, for example a portable piano, drum pad, headphones, microphone, joystick, steering wheel or dualplay Game-Pro Case.
